Hard alloy gun drill, also known as deep hole drill, represents advanced and efficient hole machining technology. It can be used not only for machining deep holes (diameter to length ratio 1:250), but also for machining shallow holes (diameter to length ratio 1:1). It consists of three parts welded together: drill shank, drill rod, and drill bit, with a through-hole in the middle, suitable for drilling cast iron, carbon steel, copper, aluminum alloy, alloy steel, etc. Gun drill can complete drilling, boring, and reaming in one go, and can process high-precision (IT6-8 level), precision straightness (0.16-0.33mm/1000mm), and low roughness (Ra3.2-Ra0.1) holes in one go. Its drilling speed reaches over 30-100 meters per minute. At present, it is widely used in industries such as shipbuilding, automobiles, engines, locomotives, chemical machinery, oil nozzles and pumps, mining machinery, and hydraulic components both domestically and internationally.

After the gun drill wears out, it needs to be sharpened in a timely and correct manner. When sharpening, the gun drill must be mounted on a special fixture on a universal cutting tool grinder or a dedicated sharpening machine for sharpening. A resin diamond grinding wheel with a particle size of about 120 can be used for sharpening, and only the inner and outer corners of the rear cutting surface are polished each time. It is necessary to ensure the correct geometric angle and blade tip position.
